[Job] How much speed do we really need?
For the last two or three weeks, I've been discussing with a few co-workers that I'm not enjoying a few things that are happening in my workplace. These things range from the lack of quality that we are shipping, to a lot of back-and-forth, and even roadblocks that were never an issue before but are now.
I was asking myself if I was doing a poor job recently or what changed, but I couldn't figure out if this was really my fault or not. Then I talked to a few people, and one answer I got actually raised a yellow flag in my head. They said, "Dude, we are doing like 4 or 5 different things at the same time; we ain't got time to read everything or even get a deeper context on most things." To be honest, I understand that; everyone is doing a lot of stuff with AI recently, but do we really need all that velocity?
When I started working in technology, things moved slowly but surely. Now I'm fighting for the attention of grown men and humans who refuse to read a fucking PRD and also complain that something isn't well written to a point that their AI agents aren't able to read or understand it well. They didn't even read it; their AI DID ALL THE WORK AND EVEN SAID WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE. This is truly madness when you think that I'm not even talking to humans anymore. Why do I need these humans anyway? If I were willing to talk to an AI about what needs to be built, wouldn't it be much faster if I did that directly? Do I really need to have a developer in the middle? Look how crazy this mindfuck is: from nowhere, I'm now just saying that someone isn't useful anymore. Am I able to reach the CEO's chair now? lol
Jokes aside, this is truly saddening me because the most important part of the job—the human interaction and the judgement—is being lost and relegated to a piece of AI, also crafted by humans but with a curated behaviour that "writes everything bland and correct".
As I said in other texts and will repeat here, this makes me sad, and every day I want more to somehow step away from this whole thing. I won't do that for now, because I still have some bullets in my cartridge, but once these bullets are gone, I will just cease operations, call it a day, and watch the world catch on fire.
Cheers.
